His Steadfast Love

Steve Summy | Monday March 31st, 2025

"For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations" (Psalm 100:5)

Psalm 100 is a short and familiar psalm of praise, and there's so much for us to learn about God's character from these few words. The fifth verse in particular shows us three traits that have encouraged me during this season of Lent:

For the LORD is Good - Since the beginning, God has been demonstrating His goodness to us. In creation, He marveled at all that He had made and declared it good. When Joseph's brothers meant evil against him, he tells us that God meant it for good. Jesus calls himself the Good ShepherdWe (the sheep) can trust Him because He is always good.

His Steadfast Love Endures Forever - Steadfast love, or lovingkindness (remember hesed?) speaks of God's true and abiding mercy for His children. While our love rises and falls with the whims of our emotions or even the “hangry” impulses of an empty stomach, God's love is steadfast

And His Faithfulness to All Generations - God's faithfulness, like his lovingkindness, is forever. Like the cornerstone of Isaiah 28:16 or the rock-solid foundation of Matthew 7:24, His faithfulness stands the test of time and holds up under any challenge.

As we consider what Jesus has done for us throughout the next few weeks, we can see that the Good Shepherd endured the Cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the Father. He is the faithful cornerstone who lasts forever.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we know that you are God. You made us and we are yours. We are your people and the sheep of your pasture. We give thanks to you and bless your name! You are good. Your steadfast love endures forever and your faithfulness to all generations! Thank you, Jesus, our Good Shepherd and the Rock of our salvation. Help us to cling to you until the very end. Amen
